The Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and the Nova Scotia Health Authority are jointly recruiting a new clinical, academic and administrative leader for the University and Central Zone Department of Diagnostic Radiology. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and accomplished radiologist with proven leadership, vision, clinical and academic credibility to lead the clinical and academic mandate of this dynamic department.

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology is an integral part of the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University and a leader of tertiary clinical service in the Maritime Provinces. It is committed to excellence in assisting patients to achieve their optimal level of well-being through dynamic and comprehensive programs and services, including clinical care; education of undergraduate and postgraduate students, other health professionals and the public; promotion of and participation in continuing medical education activities; and leadership in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge through research.

The role of Head requires dynamic leadership and vision in clinical and academic domains, together with management skill to affect excellence in care, education and research within available resources, and to align strategically and operationally within an integrated health system. The incumbent must be a strategic systems level thinker with superior interpersonal skills to negotiate, nurture and leverage opportunities that maximize productivity through collaboration, partnership and integration of academic and clinical practice.

Responsibilities of the University Department Head also include teaching programs and related research at the IWK Health Centre which serves as the tertiary care referral center for Maritime children, youth, and women.

The Nova Scotia Health Authority is the largest employer in the province. More than 23,000 employees, 2,500 physicians and 7,000 volunteers combine to provide care at more than 45 facilities throughout the province. The Central Zone provides core health services to 400,000 Halifax region residents (40% of the population of Nova Scotia) and tertiary and quaternary acute care services to residents of Atlantic Canada. The QEII Health Sciences Centre is the principal teaching hospital affiliated with Dalhousie University, and a centre for health care research.

The position is a five-year, limited term academic appointment with the possibility of renewal. A Continuing Appointment in the Department of Diagnostic Radiology will also be offered to the successful applicant. The position is subject to renewal for a second five-year term conditional on satisfactory annual performance evaluations and a positive review of the first term as Department Head.

The successful candidate will have an MD Degree or equivalent, hold or be eligible for medical licensure in Nova Scotia and hold certification in diagnostic radiology or dual certification in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent.

To be considered for this role you are a consummate professional and you embody the principles of accountability, transparency and fairness. You are a visionary, team player and outstanding communicator and you will use your skills and experience to create a positive and effective environment to enable an excellent care and learning experience. You have demonstrated experience in an academic or clinical leadership role. In addition, you have the ability to balance and achieve alignment between the academic mandate of the department and the NSHA’s strategic directions.
